Chapter 1 of 4
The Mill Village
Harold Whitaker was born in 1898 in a village whose name appeared on no map larger than the county. His father worked the looms. His mother took in washing. The house had three rooms and a photograph of a queen on the wall.
Harold left school at twelve to work alongside his father. He lost a finger at nineteen and kept the job anyway. He married Edith in 1924 in a church that still stands, though the mill does not.
