Chapter 1 of 3

Coming Home

Ted arrived in a cardboard box small enough to fit on the passenger seat. He was eight weeks old, the colour of autumn leaves, and immediately asleep on Sarah's jumper.

The children, Lily and Noah, argued over who would hold the lead on the first walk. Sarah solved it by buying two leads and attaching both. Ted did not mind. He wanted movement and grass and the smell of everything at once.

He chewed the leg of the kitchen table and looked so pleased with himself that Sarah could not scold him properly. James, her husband, built a gate for the stairs and pretended it had always been necessary.
