Chapter 1 of 3
First Light in Alfama
Elena arrived with one suitcase and a contract she could cancel with thirty days' notice. The apartment was smaller than the photographs and brighter than she expected, with blue tiles in the kitchen and a view of rooftops that changed colour through the day.
She did not speak Portuguese well. The landlord's daughter, Inês, left notes on the fridge with vocabulary: bread, market, please, thank you. Elena copied them into a notebook and mispronounced them proudly until the shopkeepers smiled.
She had left London without drama: no broken relationship, no scandal, only tiredness that had stopped responding to weekends. Lisbon offered stairs, sun, and the permission to be new.
